MANILA, Philippines - Bacolod bet Fernando Arguelles copped two titles in the seventh leg of the 14th Smart Presents the Head 2012 junior national Tennis Age-Group Satellite Circuit recently at the Noah’s Haven Tennis Club in Bacolod.
The University of Saint La Salle-Integrated School incoming sophomore routed in less than an hour Francis Sotto of San Carlos City, 6-1, 6-0, to win the title in the boys’ singles 14-under.
Arguelles, 14, booked his second crown in the doubles of boys’ 14-U together with Davao’s Cyrin Martinez in the country’s only junior nationwide satellite tournament. They beat Reynan Mahusay and Xynel Datorin, 8-3.
Juan Paolo Cansino scored a back-to-back leg title after beating Joshua Masangkay, 6-3, 6-1, in the boys’ 18-U of the event supported by Smart, Chris Sports, HEAD, Meralco, Maynilad and Toalson.
Cansino also dominated the boys’ 18-under singles in Dumaguete.
Noel Lorenzana, Smart head for wireless consumer, said he had high hopes that the competing players would achieve their dreams of becoming national tennis players.
“The Smart/Head junior tennis promotes grassroots development in tennis and we are very sure when the time comes, there will be more competitive local tennis players who will win abroad,” said Lorenzana.
In other finals results, Andrea Regino defeated Dionnelyn Perez, 6-4, 6-2, for the 18-and-under girls title, while Ralph Sevilla whipped Fernando Arguelles, 6-3, 6-4, for the boys’ 16-under crown.
Jana Pages trounced Dominique Ong 6-3, 7-5, for the girls’ 14-under singles, but Ong exacted revenge in the girls’ 16-under class, when she rallied past Jana Pages, 2-6, 7-5, 10-6, to win the title.
In the 12-under classes, Cyrin Martinez walloped Eric Ong, 6-2, 7-5, for the boys’ singles title and Kristine Salimbangon bested Erika Sevilla, 6-0, 6-1, to take home the girls’ singles crown.
