Arcilla, Capadocia bag Alcala Cup crowns

-

MANILA, Philippines - Johnny Arcilla and Marian Capadocia flashed fine form and came away with a pair of straight-set victories to rule their respective divisions in the fifth Gov. Anacleto Alcala Memorial Cup tennis tournament at the Lucena City Tennis Club in Lucena City yesterday.

The top-seeded Arcilla clipped doubles partner Patrick Tierro, 6-3, 6-3, to complete his domination of the men’s side of the week-long event held as part of Rep. Irvin Alcala and Vice Gov. Vicente Alcala’s sports development program in Lucena.

The second-ranked Capadocia, on the other hand, quashed Marinel Rudas’ bid for another upset with an emphatic 6-2, 6-1 victory in the women’s final of the tournament sponsored by Pueblo Por La Playa and St. Jude Satellite City.

Arcilla, a many-time PCA Open champion, imposed his will early and never gave Tierro a chance to retaliate, closing out his campaign in the week-long Group B event the way he started it – in one-sided fashion.

The 31-year-old Arcilla opened up with a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Jerry Pacaigue then swept past Kristian Tesorio, 6-1, 6-1, Alexander Lazaro, 6-2, 6-2, and Rolando Ruel, 6-0, 6-2, to set up a title duel with Tierro.

Capadocia, meanwhile, proved too tough for Rudas with the 16-year-old find, also the reigning PCA Open ladies champion, breaking Rudas early to gain the momentum in the first set before re-asserting her might in next to wrap up the crown.

It was a sorry setback for Rudas, who primed herself up for the crown with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(5) win over top seed Clarice Patrimonio in the semis. But Capadocia proved up to the task, outclassing Rudas with her forehand winners and solid baseline game to clinch the victory.
