Arcilla, Patrimonio roll past rivals in Alcala Cup

-

MANILA, Philippines - Top seeds Johnny Arcilla and Clarice Patrimonio fashioned out one-sided triumphs to ease to the semifinal round of their divisions in the fifth Gov. Anacleto Alcala Memorial Cup tennis tournament at the Lucena City Tennis Club in Lucena City yesterday.

Arcilla, who toppled Kristian Tesorio, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round, overpowered Alexander Lazaro with a superb all-around game for a 6-2, 6-2 romp to arrange a semis duel with Ruel Rolando in the week-long Group B event serving as part of Rep. Irvin Alcala and Vice Gov. Vicente Alcala’s sports development program.

Patrimonio, who drew a bye in the opening round, hardly worked out a sweat in disposing of Maia Balce, 6-2, 6-1, to set up a semis clash with Marinel Rudas, who survived a first-set scare before beating Aileen Rogan, 7-5, 6-1.

Second seed Marian Capadocia also posted an impressive 6-0, 6-0 rout of Mheg Canizares to book the other semis seat in the lower bracket. She faces Alyssa Labay, who outclassed Jennilyn Magpayo, 6-0, 6-2, for a spot in the finals of the event sponsored by Pueblo Por La Playa and St. Jude Satellite City.

Unlike Arcilla, Rolando struggled past a tough Ronard Joven, pulling off a 6-4, 7-5 squeaker in the other quarterfinal match. Rolando earlier thwarted Leander Lazaro, 6-3, 6-4.

Patrick Tierro, meanwhile, rolled past Mark Alcoseba, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the other semis seat in the lower half of the draw with Roel Capangpangan and Vicente Anasta disputing the fourth and last semis slot at presstime.

Arcilla also stayed on course for a sweep as he and Tierro advanced to the quarterfinal round of the boys’ doubles of the annual event hosted by the Lucena City government.
