Fr Martin Cup: Cubs, Lady Pirates prevail
MANILA, Philippines - The San Beda-A Red Cubs and the Lyceum Philippines University Lady Pirates scored contrasting wins last Sunday at the start of the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the SBC gym in Mendiola.
The Red Cubs seized control early to lead by 25 points then went on to beat the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs, 119-58, in the junior division.
The Lady Pirates, on the other hand, banked on the heroics of Frances Mae Cabinbin as they upset the reigning UAAP champions FEU Lady Tamaraws, 60-58, in the women’s side.
Javee Mocon fired 15 points for the Red Cubs who tied the Adamson Baby Falcons and the Central Luzon champions, the Jesus Is Lord Christian Fellowship squad in the early lead.
The Baby Falcons came away with a 68-53 win over the National College of Business and Arts Wildcats, while the JILCF side waylaid the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 68-53.
Cabinbin hit 28 points, including five points at endgame to key the Lady Pirates’ victory.
The Ateneo Lady Eagles, meanwhile, drew a combined 34 points from Val Chua, Sarah Mercado and Ish Tiu as they routed the Our Lady of Fatima University Lady Phoenix, 66-55.
