Cao, Oh rule Asia 14-under devp't tourney

MANILA, Philippines - Chinese Cao Si Qi and Korean Oh Chan Yeong pulled off contrasting victories to reign supreme in their respective divisions at the close of the International Tennis Federation’s Asia 14 and Under Development Championships–Division I at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.

Cao totally outclassed top seed Li Yue Nv of China, 6-1, 6-1, to rule the girls division while the top-ranked Oh bucked a first set defeat to eke out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over compatriot Chung Yun Seong for the crown in the boys side of this tournament put up by the International Tennis Federation in cooperation with the Philippine Tennis Association.

The tall, wiry Cao smashed Thai Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, 6-1, 6-1, overpowered No. 12 Fil-Am Meredith Jones, 6-1, 6-2, walloped Indian Himani Mor, 6-1, 6-0, slammed compatriot Yan Qian Ting, 6-1, 6-1, before she bamboozled Yue.

Oh, on the other hand, survived a pair of three-setters en route to the top.

He earlier disposed of Thai Phongsapak Kerdlaphee, 6-0, 6-1, and Aryan Indian Goveas, 6-2, 6-1, then ran into tougher foes in No. 11 Meng Cing Yang of Chinese Taipei, No. 4 Zhang Ting Hui and Wu Tung Lin.

In girls’ doubles, Cao teamed up with Li as they trounced No. 3 Choi Seo In of Korea and Pranjala Yadlapalli of India, 4-1, 4-2, to barge into the finals.

Cao and Li were playing No. 2 Bae Dohee and Um Seon Young of Korea, who turned back a hard-fighting duo of Manita Bootsarakomvisit and Napharat Sawangkaew of Thailand, 4-0, 2-4, 10-2, at press time.

No. 4 Jurabek Karimov of Uzbekistan and Lim Lim Min Soeb of Korea humbled No. 2 Meng Cing Ynag and Wu Tung Lin of Chinese Taipei, 5-4 (2), 4-2, and No. 7 Lok Pui Lawrence Lo and Hong Kit Wong of Hong Kong waylaid No. 8 Phongsapak Kerdlaphee and Nawakarn Khunjan of Thailand, 4-2, 4-1, to set up a boys’ doubles finale.
