Angelicum, CSA breeze through Shakey's semis

MANILA, Philippines - Colegio San Agustin toppled UP Integrated School, 25-7, 25-18, while Angelicum College won by default over St. James Academy-Malabon to complete the semifinal cast in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volley League NCR leg at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig last weekend.

The CSA tossers closed out the single round elims with a 5-1 slate in Pool B while ANC notched its fifth straight win but must beat MGC New Life Academy in two sets at the close of the elims Saturday to get the top seeding in the crossover semis of the event sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Metro Sports.

If the ANC-MGC match goes through a decider, CSA will clinch the No. 1 spot in the next round. Games this Saturday will be held at the Arellano gym in Legarda starting at 10 a.m. with the ANC-MGC duel followed by the SJM-UP, the ESS-St. James-Parañaque, Rizal High School-DLZ and the UP-MGC matches.

Six-time defending champion Mighty Sports Hope Christian School and National University took the two other semis spots with the former foiling De La Salle-Zobel’s backdoor bid with a 25-17, 25-11 win for a sweep of Pool A. NU hurdled Elizabeth Seton School to finish with a 5-1 card and book the other semis seat in the tournament backed by Toby’s, Mikasa and Asics.

Meanwhile, New Ormoc City High School survived St. Therese Educational Foundation in a thrilling duel, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, to rule the Eastern Visayas leg and gain a berth in the Tournament of Champions slated March 21-24 in Davao City.

Central Philippines University held off St. Joseph School, 25-22, 25-19, 27-25, to top the Western Visayas elims and join other regional qualifiers Baguio City National High School (Northern Luzon), Holy Family Academy (Central Luzon) and De La Salle-Lipa (Southern Luzon) in the T-of-C.
