Western Visayas dominates athletics, gains overall lead

ILOILO City, Philippines  –  Host Western Visayas (Region 6) reigned supreme in the centerpiece  event of athletics, beating powerhouse National Capital Region and Southern Tagalog (Region 4) in a tight three-way battle for supremacy at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Connie Caselo put the finishing touches to Western Visayas’ emergence by bagging the gold medal in women’s discus throw with a heave of 29.62 meters.

Jeneva Calma of Central Luzon (Region 3) finished with the silver medal, while Fatima Mitra of Ilocos (Region 1) took the bronze.

Overall, Western Visayas captured 15 gold medals against 11 by NCR and nine by Southern Tagalog.

Western Visayas also added 13 silvers and nine bronzes to complete its title romp. NCR had 11 silvers and 10 bronzes and Southern Tagalog had five silvers and seven bronzes.

Central Luzon (Region 3) finished fourth overall with 4-10-11, while Cagayan Valley (Region 2) came in fifth with 3-2-0.

NCR also struggled in other fronts as hostilities in the week-long, multi-event competition entered its penultimate day.

In men’s basketball, Central Luzon (Region 3) shocked last year’s champion NCR, 67-65.

In women’s basketball, NCR  dumped Region 1, 75-53, and Region 3, 62-26.

Region 6 outclassed  Region 10, 75-54., and CAR, 50-30, in other women’s basketball match.

 In women’s lawn tennis, Region 3 defeated NCR and Region 5 for the gold medal.

NCR, however,  bagged the gold in men’s lawn tennis by beating Region 8 and Region 4.

In men’s beach volleyball, it was Region 6 over Region 9, 21-13, 21-15; Region 11 over Region 4, 21-10, 21-18. Over at the Pavia football grounds, NCR nipped Region 4, 1-0, and Region 6 downed CAR, 2-0.

Meanwhile, Darylle Francis Salvador of Region 3 and Chantelly Kae Gonzales of Region 7 were crowned Mr. and Ms. SCUAA 2012 during awarding ceremonies.

Eigiee Edison Magdangal of NCR and Ronel Kay Juperatum of Region 6 finished second and third in the Mr. SCUAA, while Marie Antonette Barrera of Region 9 and Mary Jane Verdillo of Region 2 came in second and third in the  Ms. SCUAA.
