UE to honor sports champs

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the East (UE) will give honors to its student-athlete achievers at the UE’s Recognition Day 2012, the awarding ceremonies for the academic excellence and exemplary performance, slated today, at 2 p.m., at the UE Conference Hall.

Dentistry student Rochelle Andres, UAAP Season 74’s Most Improved Player and a member of the champion UE Lady Warriors badminton team, will receive the Athlete of the Year award.

Andres will also receive a Most Outstanding Athlete award, together with 67 awardees. This year’s awardees in the men and women divisions consist of athletes that garnered gold, silver and bronze medals in badminton, fencing, judo, taekwondo, track and field, softball, and swimming tournaments during the 74th UAAP Season, and in weightlifting competitions. Those who competed at the 26th South East Asian Games and other international tournaments will also be given awards, according to UE Physical Education Dept. (UE PE) OIC/assistant director Rodrigo Roque.

UE president and chief academic officer Ester Garcia will lead the awarding, assisted by UE College deans.

Partial list of recipients of the Most Outstanding Athlete awards:

 Badminton: UAAP 74 MVP Jamila Fatima Cruz, and teammates Kimverly Gatpolintan, May Laurece Pamorada, Bianca Gail Reytas, and Bianca Marie Nicole J. Semilla.

Fencing: UAAP 74 Rookie of the Year Bruce Kevin Ng, members of the five-peat UAAP champions UE Lady-Warriors: UAAP 74 MVP Patricia Marie Melendres, Cristine Almas, Clicheilyn Del Rosario, Elaine Kea Gonzales, Antonette Lavilla, Anna Terizza Mari Macaraig, Jylyn Nicanor, Keren Pangilinan and Rose Ann Reyes.

Track and Field: UAAP 74’s fastest sprinter and Rookie of the Year Jenyrose Rosales (100m, 200m and 400m

Judo: Mary Grace S. Guiling, gold, 70 kg.

Swimming: 200m breaststroke gold medalist Ajirulla Jaitulla;
