MANILA, Philippines - Chiang Kai Shek College denied Xavier star Jeron Teng a glorious high school exit as the Blue Dragons overpowered the Golden Stallions, 70-50, to earn a return trip to the finals of the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTBA) Tournament at the Uno High School gym last Wednesday.
The Blue Dragons, with leading MVP contender John Kevin Baytan on the firing end, rode on a big first quarter run then sustained their form in the second half to frustrate the Stallions and win pulling away.
With their offense in full throttle, the 14-time champion Chiang Kai Shek also clamped down on defense, limiting the prolific Teng and completely wiping out Xavier’s twice-to-beat advantage in their semis duel.
The Blue Dragons forced a knockout match with an 83-79 win last Monday.
Chiang Kai Shek thus arranged a best-of-three title clash with unbeaten Hope Christian High School which starts Monday in the event presented by Regan Industrials Sales Inc. and World Balance.
It will be Chiang Kai Shek College’s first finals stint since 2007 while ending the Golden Stallions’ four-year reign.
Baytan finished in double-double with 27 points (10-16 FG, including 3-for-6 from beyond the range) and 12 rebounds while Carlo Young and Joshua Tan added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Teng closed out his high school career with 18 points (4-for-18 from the field).
The event is backed by Uratex, Burlington, Summit Drinking Water, 100 Plus, Supreme Steel Pipe, Superior Pipe, Ace Water Spa and Molten.
Meantime, Chiang Kai Shek College and Xavier are disputing the Aspirants division crown at presstime. CKSC is also favored to win the girls title against defending champion St. Jude Catholic School. The two teams are also playing at presstime.
