NU, Angelicum unbeaten in Shakey's volley

MANILA, Philippines - National University (NU) knocked off two rivals in thrilling fashions last weekend for its third win in a row whileAngelicum College (ANC) hurdled Kings’ Montessori School (KMS) for its second straight victory in the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League NCR leg at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

The NU spikers, who swept Rizal High School in the opener, fought back from a set down to repulse St. James College-Parañaque (SJP), 21-25, 25-14, 25-20, then leaned on the combined 35-kill output of Alyja Santiago and Jorelle Singh to hold off UST, 25-19, 25-22, and remain unbeaten in Pool A of the two-division tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

The ANC tossers scored a follow-up to their tough 20-25, 29-27, 25-18 victory over the Colegio San Agustin (CSA) side with a 27-25, 25-16 win over KMS to pace the Pool B side of the event organized by Metro Sports and backed by Toby’s, Mikasa and Asics

In other matches, reigning UAAP junior champion De La Salle-Zobel (DLZ) turned back Elizabeth Seton School (ESS), 28-26, 25-18, to kick off its title drive in Pool A, while University of the East (UE) rebounded from an opening set loss to pound out a 24-26, 25-14, 25-16 decision over MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGC) in Pool B.

Julienne Calugcug came away with 11 kills while Kim Dy added 10 points as DLZ overcame a six-point deficit to snatch the opening set before the Alabang-based squad stamped its class in the second to complete the sweep.

SJP evened its card to 1-1 with a 25-13, 25-18 romp over RHS in Pool A of the event where the top two teams in both divisions will clash in the crossover semis. The winners will then dispute the NCR leg crown and a berth in the Tournament of Champions slated March 21-24 in Davao City.
