MANILA, Philippines - Carlos Condit stunned Nick Diaz and pulled off a unanimous decision in the Ultimate Fighting Championship 143 yesterday to bag the interim welterweight crown and gain a crack at division champion George St. Pierre late this year.
Condit won it on all three judges cards, 49-46, 49-46, 48-47, as he improved to 27 wins against five losses that proved enough to line him up against St. Pierre, still recuperating from a knee injury.
“Hats off to Nick Diaz,” said Condit in the post-fight interview. “He’s a warrior. I’ve got nothing but admiration and respect for him.”
But the verdict surprised many, including Diaz, who seemed to be the aggressor almost all throughout the duel.
In disgust, Diaz, who fell to 27-8-1 (win-loss-draw), announced he might retire because of the controversial defeat.
