Long appeals case for entry to PBA draft

- Joey Villar, Nelson Beltran -

MANILA, Philippines - Kirk Long, an American born and raised in the country who has played out his collegiate basketball eligibility with Ateneo, will make an appeal that he be considered a special case to be allowed to join the next PBA draft.

Arben Santos, an Ateneo backer who handles some former Ateneo players in the pros, said he would appeal to PBA officials on Long’s behalf.

Under PBA rules, Long isn’t eligible for the pro draft since he has no Filipino bloodline. The draft is only open to Filipino citizens.

Santos, however, feels Long deserves some consideration, having lived all his life in the Philippines, played high school and varsity ball in the country and being a role model on the court.

Santos mentioned the “Model National Collegiate Player of the Year award” accorded by the PCCL to the Ateneo team captain.

“Kirk Long has practically served nine years of residency in Philippine basketball. He’s been a role model and he’s not dominant,” said Santos.

Ateneo coach Norman Black also hopes that his player be given consideration.

“I think the PBA should consider allowing foreign players who’ve played high school and college in the country to join the draft. That would mean an eight or nine-year residence, disqualifying those who come in only to play in the seniors,” Black said.

Santos said Long has a noble goal why he wants to make the PBA.

“He wants to be known so he can spread the words of God easier,” said Santos.

Kirk’s father Jeff is a pastor with Faith Academy. The younger Long intends to follow in the footsteps of his father.

Powerade assistant coach Alex Campton, also an American born in the country, has been given special concession by the PBA, once allowed to play for Rain or Shine as “special import.”

“If Alex was given special consideration, why not Kirk? Kirk has spent all his life here. Alex was born here but attended school in the US,” said Santos.

Compton played for the Madison West High School basketball squad then suited up with the Cornell U team.
