UAAP tiffs unwrap in six fronts
MANILA, Philippines - Season 74 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) gets busiest as ever this weekend with football and chess kicking off and volleyball, tennis, baseball and softball resuming in various venues.
Men’s football pits De La Salle against University of the East (UE) at 10 a.m., University of Santo Tomas (UST) against Far Eastern University (FEU) at 2 p.m. and University of the Philippines (UP) against Ateneo at 3 p.m., while in the women’s division, it will be De La Salle against Ateneo at 1 p.m. and UST against UP at 3:15 p.m. and in the juniors side, it will be Ateneo against La Salle-Zobel at 8 a.m. and FEU against UST at 10 a.m. All matches will be played at the Ateneo fields in Katipunan.
In Manila at the FEU Mini Theater, chess action gets going at noon to coincide with the busy schedule at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex where tennis, softball and juniors baseball eliminations resume.
The pairings in men’s chess are Adamson against FEU, UP against UST, NU against Ateneo and De La Salle against UE; in the women’s it will be FEU against De La Salle, UP against UST, UE against NU and Adamson against Ateneo; and in juniors, it will be Adamson against La Salle-Zobel, NU against UST and Ateneo against UE, with FEU drawing a first-round bye.
In tennis, it will be National University (NU) against De La Salle and Ateneo against UE at 9 a.m. and UST against UP at noon in the men’s contest and Ateneo against UST also at noon in the women’s division.
In softball at the fabled Rizal Memorial diamond, UE takes on UP at 8 a.m., Adamson battles Ateneo at 10 a.m. and UST faces De La Salle at noon and later in the day, the juniors baseball teams of Ateneo and UST clash at 3 p.m.
Second-round action in volleyball at the Arena in San Juan also is on today’s schedule. Men’s leader UST (6-1) takes on FEU (5-2) at 9 a.m. and NU (5-2) meets Adamson (4-3) at 10:30 a.m. and in the women’s, NU (1-6) faces FEU (4-3) at 2 p.m. and unbeaten defending champion De La Salle (7-0) takes on Adamson (4-3).
