MANILA, Philippines - Grandmasters Eugene Torre and Wesley So will hold a rare simultaneous chess exhibition on Feb. 4 at the Meralco canteen in Ortigas Ave. to promote the sport and at the same time raise funds for the family of the late two-time Olympian and National Master Mirabeau Maga.
Dubbed “Maging Sino Ka Man” chess, the event, set at 1 p.m., aims to challenge the participants’ problem-solving abilities.
“We’re doing this to promote chess in the grassroots level,” said Torre.
“The funds to be raised would go to the family of kuya Maging,” said So.
Fondly called “Maging” in local chess scene, the Davao City native Maga passed away last Dec. 26. He was 58.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chairman/president Butch Pichay, NCFP executive director GM Jayson Gonzales, Sen. Koko Pimentel, tournament organizer Reginald Tee and Meralco Chess Club president Rolly Sol Cruz are expected to grace the affair.
Registration fee is P500. For details, call or text 0918-929-8969 and 0908-880-7650.
