MANILA, Philippines - Darwin Brito and Trisha Nicole Copon fashioned out victories in the last round to top the final evaluation tournament of the Milo Checkmate chess program at Tejeros Convention in Rosario, Cavite last weekend.
The fourth seeded Brito, 15, of Rosario National High School claimed the title for Beginners 2 section by beating No. 10 Marthie Lim and sweeping the five-round tournament, a chess development project for Rosarians’ youth by Mayor Nonong Ricafrente.
Copon, 11, of DPJ Elem. School, upset No. 4 Erin Pallerna to finish with five points and bag the Beginners 1 course title.
The top three age-group scorers: 8-under - (Evaristo, Primero and John Carlo Taglinao - Beginners 1); 10-under (Aguilar and Marina Barbuco - Beginners 2; and Ilas, Pitagan and Ambil for Beginners 1); 12-under (Salazar, Papina and John Rovick Lagao for Beginners 2 and Copon, Siladan, Pallerna - Beginners 1).
