MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo snatched its fourth win in five games and at the same time dealt University of the Philippines (UP) its sixth straight loss, 25-13, 25-21, 25-12, in UAAP Season 74 women’s volleyball action yesterday at the Arena in San Juan.
University of Santo Tomas (UST), meanwhile, has slowly and surely built its own by notching its fourth straight triumph at the expense of National University (NU), 25-11, 25-21, 25-18, in the other women’s game.
In men’s action, Adamson University denied Far Eastern University (FEU) the chance to sweep the seven-game first-round eliminations with a nail-biting 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10 triumph also yesterday.
Despite the victory, Ateneo head coach Roger Gorayeb wasn’t satisfied with what his wards showed against the Lady Maroons.
“We’re happy with the win, but I wasn’t satisfied with what happened in the second set. We committed 12 unforced errors and we gave away a lot of easy points,” said Gorayeb.
The Lady Eagles managed to wake up from that mild second-set slumber behind Fille Cainglet, Gretchen Ho and Dzi Gervacio to complete the straight-set win.
Rookie Alyssa Valdez and Cainglet each had 15 points, while Ho and Gervacio made seven hits each and libero Denden Lazaro contributed 11 digs for the Lady Eagles.
