Capadocia, Resma seal PSC netfest semis clash

MANILA, Philippines - Top seed Jade Marian Capadocia and Roxanne Resma whipped their respective rivals to set up a key semis duel in the girls’ premier class in the second PSC/Philta age group tennis championship at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Capadocia, playing out of Mabini High School, yielded just two games to oust Maia Balce, 6-0, 6-2, while Resma, 14, broke Nicole Paez once in the first set then dominated the second for a 6-3, 6-1 romp in the tournament sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission.

Second seed Ma. Angela Sunga breezed through the semis in the lower half of the draw with a walkover win over Jana Hernandez to arrange a clash with No. 3 Isabella Mendoza, who also won by default over Bea Ebriega.

Capadocia also lined herself up for the U-16 crown as she whitewashed Paez, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semis while Sunga also gained a Final Four seat with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nicole Amistad in the event initiated by sports commissioner Col. Buddy Andrada.

In boys’ U-18, No. 7 Andrew Joshua Cano outlasted Justin Viñas in a thrilling second set duel, 6-1, 7-6(8-6) to advance to the quarterfinals against top seed Dheo Talatayod.

Third seed Kyle Parpan demolished Arc Dolorito, 6-1, 6-1, to set up a showdown with No. 6 Argil Lance Canizares, who scored a 4-6, 5-0 (Ret.) win over Jose Nicholas Cano.

Others who advanced were Maverick Salvacion and Eric Olivarez Jr., who upset No. 5 Kyle Joseph, 6-3, 6-3.

Parpan, meanwhile, gained a spot in the U-16 quarters with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Luis Sunga while Joseph advanced via default.

Rains, meanwhile, delayed the staging of yesterday’s quarterfinal matches in the girls’ U-14 with top seed Erika Manduriao set to clash with Capadocia, and No. 2 Ma. Dominique Ong tangling with Monica Cruz.
