MANILA, Philippines - Fille Cainglet unleashed 20 hits to power Ateneo past UE, 26-24, 25-12, 25-7, for the solo lead in UAAP Season 74 women’s volleyball action at the Blue Eagle gym yesterday.
The Lady Eagles struggled against the Lady Warriors in the opening set but Cainglet rose to the challenge and with a service ace that UE skipper Jimberly Dawn Dizon could not handle, gave Ateneo the initiative in the match.
The Lady Warriors could not get their act together in the second set and fell into a series of reception errors, allowing the Lady Eagles to sprint to an 18-8 lead they never relinquished.
And despite coach Roger Gorayeb’s decision to rest Alyssa Valdez for the entire second set, the Lady Eagles had another gem in sophomore Ella de Jesus who delivered the goods.
Cainglet remained unstoppable in the third set where she dished out three aces as the Lady Eagles notched their second straight win heading to their match against defending champion De La Salle on Saturday.
