DAGUPAN CITY ,Philippines – Officials here hailed a Dagupeño who won a bronze medal in the individual karatedo competition in the 26th South East Asian Games in Palembang and Jakarta, Indonesia from Nov. 11 to 22.
Jason Ramil Macaalay, from Barangay Caranglaan here, paid a courtesy call on Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez yesterday during the city council’s regular session, bringing with him his individual bronze medal and silver medal won by the Philippine team.
Macaalay, a member of the Wado Ryu Club, said he has been into the sports since he was nine.
The 20-year-old athlete is the first resident of this city to earn a medal in the entire history of the Games.
He said it was his cousin who convinced him to go into karatedo.
Fernandez said they would pass a resolution congratulating Macaalay for his international feat participated in by 11 countries.
“I’m proud to be a Dagupeño,” Fernandez said, referring to Macaalay’s victory.
