LAS VEGAS – Undefeated junior welterweight Mike “Mile High” Alvarado of Thornton, Colorado continued his climb to the top of the rankings by knocking out Breidis Prescott of Colombia in the final round of their 10-round contest.
Alvarado and Prescott went into an all-out war the entire evening in many instances fighting in a phone-booth type battle with Alvarado’s face bloodied in the early rounds as Prescott rained bombs on Alvarado’s face.
But Alvarado recovered his bearing and began to connect decisively in the later rounds, pushing Prescott to box more than he ever did.
The end came at 1:53 of the last round as Prescott finally went down from a series of powerful uppercuts from Alvarado. The referee stopped the contest without finishing the count.
The punch stats were about even with Alvarado throwing 566 punches and connecting 192 while Prescott had 608 with 208 connections. Alvarado sent in 279 power punches connecting 120 to Prescott’s 273 with 98 connects.
Prescott was leading in the scorecards at 87-84, 87-74 and 86-85 after the ninth round.
The win raised Alvarado’s streak to 32, including 32 knockouts while Prescott took his fourth defeat against 24 victories.
