Arcilla sweeps Hagedorn tennis singles title

MANILA, Philippines - Davis Cup veteran Johnny Arcilla lived up to his billing as he outclassed Elbert Anasta, 6-1, 6-0, to pocket the men’s singles crown in the first Mayor Edward Hagedorn Tennis Championships at the Socrates Memorial tennis center in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The 31-year-old Arcilla dominated Anasta with his power game and wrapped up the match in less than an hour.

“We’ve been in the Davis Cup team so I knew his game. But I didn’t take him for granted since he’s strong and determined to win,” said Arcilla in Filipino.

The win was worth P50,000 for Arcilla, who will be seeing action in this month’s SEA Games, while Anasta settled for P25,000 in the tournament supported by the Philippine Lawn Tennis Association, Palawan Pawnshop Express Padala and Prince.

On his way to the finals, Arcilla defeated Ronaldo Ruel Jr., 6-0, 7-6 (4); Israel Abarquez, 6-1, 6-1; and Kim Ivor Saraza, 6-4, 6-0, while Anasta ousted Patrick John Tierro, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; Ronard Joven, 6-3, 7-6 (5); and Randy Delavin, 6-2, 6-3.

“It’s a good exposure and warm-up for me before the SEA Games. We know we’re in for a tough outing there, particularly against Thailand, which is out to get even with us,” Arcilla said.

Arcilla later teamed up with Tierro to beat Anasta and Joven in the doubles finals, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to complete a sweep.

“It’s been a great week. It showcased the huge talent we have in tennis. This tournament will serve as the training ground of the aspiring ones as we’re planning to stage it annually,” said Hagedorn.
