MANILA, Philippines - Art Arbole closed out with a one-over par 73 then beat Reymon Jaraula and Clyde Mondilla in sudden death to cop the men’s crown while Dottie Ardina dominated the the ladies side in the 12th Canlubang Amateur Open at Cangolf’s south course in Laguna yesterday.
Arbole, who led in the first round with a 70 but dropped behind a surging Jaraula Thursday, fought back with clutch pars at the backside to salvage that 73 then outsteadied Jaraula and ICTSI-Cangolf teammate Mondilla in the first playoff hole to capture the title.
The victory was worth P10,000 for Arbole, who wound up tied with Jaraula and Mondilla at 215.
Jaraula, the top ICTSI-The Country Club bet, hobbled with a 74 after a solid 69 in the second round while Mondilla matched Arbole’s 73.
Rupert Zaragoza, the reigning junior and national champion, failed to sustain his second round 68 as he fumbled with a 75 and settled for fourth at 217.
Ardina, meanwhile, fired a three-under 69 to finish with a 139 for a four-shot victory over last year’s winner and ICTSI teammate Lovelynn Guioguio, who had a 143 after a 71.
It was Ardina’s second straight victory after whipping the field in the Thailand Amateur Open, where she essayed a 10-shot romp over Chihiro Ikeda two weeks ago.
Princess Superal and reigning Hong Kong Am Open champion Jayvie Agojo finished tied for third at 144 after a 71 and 68, respectively, while Ikeda shot a 70 and shared fifth place with Anna Sabater, who matched par 72, at 147.
In other results, Nicolas Santiano took the Class A crown with a 150 from two 75s, nipping Mari Hechanova, who had a 151 after a 71, while Alex Reyes posted a four-shot victory in Class B with a 164 after a 79. Oh Woong Bi made a 168 after an 85 for second.
Joshua Icasas topped Class C with a 175 after a 90 for a five-shot win over Fred Fabula, who had a 91 for a 180.
The net winners were Anthony See (139-Class A), Manny Comia (138-Class B), Angel Timario (130-Class C), Nicole Constantino (124-ladies).
