Fancied bets breeze thru in Asian U-14 netfest

MANILA, Philippines - Top seed Albert Lim Jr. and No. 2 Daniel Villasenor scored victories in emphatic fashions to lead the charge of the favorites in the Mariposa Foundation Cup Presented by the Philippine Tennis Academy ATF 14-Under Series at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Lim, a freshman at Letran who is coming off a month-long stint in the US, overwhelmed Tomas Puno, 6-0, 6-1, in the upper half of the draw while Villasenor trounced John Cerezo, 6-0, 6-1, in the lower bracket to advance to the next round of the week-long tournament featuring the country’s future net stars and foreign bets.

Third seed Park Ji-hun of Korea defeated qualifier Marvin Carlos Palomino of Spain, 6-1, 6-1, while No. 4 Eric Olivarez Jr. booted out Japanese Mikio Shimomura, 6-1, 6-0, in the event sponsored by the PTA and backed by ATP head as official balls.

Lim, a member of the elite program of the PTA, resumes his bid against No. 16 Fernando Jose Arguelles, who blanked Aidyll Ignacio, 6-0, 6-0.

Others who advanced were Chung Yun-seong of Korea, Jeleardo Amazona, Marc Agner, Angelo Gonzales, Dave Mosqueda, Christian Lopez and Allian Quoahar.

Chung whipped Miguel de la Paz, 6-0, 6-2, Amazona held off Thai Itchya Meesommon, 6-2, 6-3, Agner toppled Marraphael Teng, 6-1, 6-0, Gonzales whitewashed Enrico Ong, 6-0, 6-0, Mosqueda downed Joel Atienza, 6-3, 6-2, Lopez beat Chris Prulla, 6-1, 6-3, and Quoahar scored a walkover win over qualifier Manuel Balce III.

In the distaff side, Korea Soomin Kim dominated local bet Rose San Jose, 6-0, 6-1, but will face Filipina top seed Roxanne May Resma, who drew an opening round bye, in the second round of the tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta).
