Summit Point to test Phl best in Samsung Am
MANILA, Philippines - The Summit Point layout in Lipa, Batangas has been spruced to championship form in time for the Samsung Amateur Open which fires off Oct. 21 featuring the cream of the crop and the rising stars from the junior golf ranks.
Dubbed the Summit Point World 18 course, the par-72 layout features the famous and revered golf holes in the world, including Augusta National’s noted Amen Corner (Nos. 10, 11 and 12), the No. 10 of Pebble Beach, No. 16 of Oakland Hills and No. 14 of St. Andrews, making it a true test of golf for the competing field chasing one of the country’s prestigious amateur titles.
Aristeo Mata and Park Jung-soo, who finished joint runners-up to Charles Hong in last year’s edition of the event presented by Samsung Phils. at Eastridge, will be back in the hunt for the crown along with members of the national pool and the leading jungolfers plus the top finishers in the recent Samsung national club and pro-am championships.
Unlike in the past stagings of the event. however, the upcoming 36-hole tournament will not only be a showcase of shot-making but also of mental toughness with the course expected to bring out the best or the worst in the field, especially in the presence of the wind.
Designed by world-renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., the unique Summit Point World 18 course also features holes inspired by Royal Dormoch’s No. 8, Harbour Town’s No. 18, Winged Foot’s No. 10, Seminole’s No. 7, Carnoustie’s No. 16 and Spyglass No. 16.

The other categories are on tap in the stroke-play event, put up by Samsung Phils. in its effort to develop the sport and discover talents who could be tapped and trained to become members of the national team, are Classes A (4-8.9), B (9-14.9), C (15-21.9) and D (22-and-above) for men and Classes A (0-8.9), B (9-19.9) and C (20-and-above) for ladies.
