San Beda, UP rule inter-school taekwondo tiff

MANILA, Philippines - San Beda College and University of the Philippines bagged three gold medals each to emerge senior men and senior women champions, respectively, in the recent SMART inter-school taekwondo tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Bantamweight Kevin Ngitngit, lightweight Alvine Cuvinar and welter/middle Ron Servito produced the Bedans’ golds, while bantam Marigold Taculog, lightweight Cyrmyn Perlas and welter/middle Geneve Castillo came through with vital gold victories for the UP Diliman squad.

The Bedans finished ahead of Rizal Technological College and UP, while the UP lady jins outsteadied San Beda and Lyceum.

The other champions in the other categories were Juan Sumulong, grade school boys; OLOPSC, grade school girls; La Salle Greenhills, junior men; and University of Baguio , junior women.

The other senior men’s (advance) gold medalists were fin Ryan Pontanares (Arellano University), fly Armando Lazaro (UP) and Sandy Canino (RTU).

The other senior women’s (advance) gold winners were fin Anjelay Pelaez (San Beda), fly Mikberly Paldin (Lyceum) and feather Melanie Douglas (San Beda).

World Taekwondo Federation president Dr. Chung-Won Choue of Korea graced the first day of action last Sunday, together with other WTF officials Prof. Kwon Se, Eun, Prof. Bae Jaesuk and Prof. Kim Jung Hyoun.

The tourney was sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, PLDT, SMART Communications and Milo.
