UP tanker shines in PSL swim meet

MANILA, Philippines - University of the Philippines tanker Claire Adorna broke all three meet records in a three-gold medal haul as she showed the way in the Philippine Swimming League-Diliman Preparatory School monthly swim meet yesterday at the Amoranto swimming pool.

Adorna, bracing up for next month’s UAAP swimming championship where UP is the defending men’s and women’s champion, ruled the 100m freestyle in 1:01, the 50m freestyle in 27.98 seconds and the 50m butterfly in 30 seconds to become the most outstanding female swimmer among 300 participants.

The DPS Swimming Club of former Sen. Nikki Coseteng hauled more than 15 gold medals through the effort of Jaja Cordero, Denji Cordero, Kevin Claveria, Sam Doragos and Portia Doragos, all new members of the DPS varsity team.

Ten-year-old Aki Lorbes won two gold medals – in the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke.

PSL president Susan Papa said she was elated with the turnout of participants who all came for the competition which started and finished on time despite the heavy rains.

“I thought very few swimmers would show up because of the bad weather, but swimmers were all there and just wanting to compete. Everybody was willing to get wet, including the volunteers,” said Papa.

Coseteng, who gave a motivational talk to the competitors, also awarded the medals to the winners.
