Escalante hopes to regain top spot
MANILA, Philippines - Tuason Racing protégé Basti Escalante tries to get back on top as he goes for the crucial win in the fifth leg of the 2011 National Karting Super Series at the Enchanted Kingdom Kart Track.
Patience and strategy will play key roles for Escalante, a De La Salle Grade 7 student who’s hoping to regain solo leadership in the Formula SL Novice class with the big support of Tuason Racing School, Castrol, OMP, C! Magazine, Oakley, Discovery Suites, Belo Men, Toptul, Aguila Auto Glass, Speedlab, and his individual sponsors Audi, Transnational Diversified Group, Werdenberg International Corp., Bridgestone, Puma, Coke Zero, Bank of Commerce, Emcor, KServico, Washington Watches and The Philippine Star.
The Asian Karting Open Championship last month taught him big lessons about patience as Tuason Racing Technical and Operations manager and multi-titled race car champion Mike Tuason stresses the need for Escalante to refocus his strategy.
“He’s already there. He has mastered the technique on the perfect time to pass other drivers but maintaining one’s momentum is a different thing. And more often, haste makes waste,” said Tuason, referring to his ward’s performance in the Asian Karting Open.
Escalante then started near the tailend but determination paved the way for him to move up second overall in the final race. However, he pushed the issue too much, leading to a spin-out that almost forced him out of the race.
Good thing, he still managed to get back in the race and even bagged the third place trophy.
However, the performance cost him dearly as he lost solo leadership. From a two-point advantage, he slipped back to second place overall with an eight-point deficit at 239 points.
“Hopefully, more patience and less mistakes this time as the Enchanted Kingdom track is highly technical with its narrow but fast course,” said Escalante.
Basti is one of the pioneer products of the Tuason Racing School Racing Career Management Program (TRS-RCM) which is aimed at helping young racers achieve a successful career path in motorsports. Multi-disciplined racers and champions JP and Mike Tuason designed the said program patterned after the training program of Formula One drivers to fast track the development and training of young potentials into champion racers.
