CEU, 2 others hurdle foes in WNC opener

MANILA, Philippines - Centro Escolar University, De La Salle Zobel and Poveda won all their basketball and volleyball assignments during the opening weekend of the 42nd WNCAA at various venues.

CEU routed host Rizal Technological University, 55-38, in the first game of the season at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium Saturday while Poveda held off St. Paul College-Pasig, 22-19, in the midget division. 

Defending midget champion DLSZ downed Miriam College, 33-22, Sunday at the St. Scholastica gym.

In volleyball at the RTU gym Sunday, CEU stopped Philippine Women’s University, 25-17, 27-25, 25-15; Poveda swept La Salle College Antipolo, 25-18, 25-19; and DLSZ dominated St. Paul, 25-6, 25-8.

Also winning their senior basketball matches were San Beda College Alabang over St. Scholastica’s College, 44-38; Emilio Aguinaldo College against University of Asia and the Pacific, 65-61; and PWU versus Miriam, 59-51.

Other volleyball winners of the tournament, backed by Mikasa, Molten, Goody, MJC Press, Monster Radio RX 93.1 and AGR Xperts Corp., were Miriam over St. Jude Catholic School, 25-11, 25-9 (midget); RTU over Miriam, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21; San Beda over St. Scholastica, 25-23, 25-20, 25-8; and UA&P over EAC, 25-14, 25-14, 25-13.

Meanwhile, the opening ceremony will be shown on AKTV (IBC 13 and Sky Cable Channel 15) today at 9 p.m.
