Lanete, the roaring Lion

MANILA, Philippines - San Beda’s Garvo Lanete is focused on ending his collegiate campaign the way he started it – with a bang.

He scored another milestone in the 87th NCAA basketball tournament by winning an ACCEL-3XVI NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week plum following a performance to remember versus Emilio Aguinaldo College.

Lanete, younger brother of PBA player Chico, torched EAC with a career- and season-high 32 points including five triples, leading the Lions to a 103-62 rout of the Generals.

The Lions caught up with the San Sebastian Stags at the lead on identical 5-0 slates.

Lanete, converting 13 of 20 field-goal attempts versus EAC, is now the league’s fifth best scorer with an average of 17.4 points a game.

The 32-point output by Lanete was the highest in the season, eclipsing the 31-point production of San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva when the Stags manhandled host University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 87-60, last July 11.

“This is my final year in the NCAA and I really want to help this team in whatever way I can. We were also focused on bouncing back strong after our poor game against St. Benilde and maybe that also contributed to my performance,” said Lanete, who hails from Cebu.

Lanete was at his best in the second period when he drilled in 13 points as the Lions outscored the Generals, 34-20, to stretch a slim 18-15 advantage to 52-35 at halftime.

“He has been a consistent performer for us but today I really got an excellent game from Garvo,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim.

Other players considered for the weekly citation were and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta’s George Allen.
