MANILA, Philippines - The UE fencing team won the overall championship in the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) National Games held in Bacolod May 23-27.
The UE squad amassed four gold, five silver, seven bronze medals and bested the teams of UST, DLSU, AdMU, FEU, UP and UA&P.
The UE Warrior-Fencers won 10 of their 16 medals – two golds, two silvers and six bronzes – in the individual events. The gold was won by Jamie Nicanor (foil) and Mary Rose Alfonzo (saber), and the silver by Edmon Velez (saber) and Justine Gail Tinio (foil).
The bronze medalists were Jylyn Nicanor, Clicheilyn Del Rosario (saber) and Cristine Almas (epee), Eric Brando (men’s saber) and the fencing team of head coach Rolando Canlas Jr. and Michael Nicanor (foil).
In the team events, the Warriors brought home two gold, three silver and one bronze medals.
Ruling the men’s team foil gold was the squad of Canlas, Nicanor, Nathaniel Perez and Francois Nowell Licono. The women’s team saber gold winner was the team of Mary Rose Alfonzo, Jylyn Nicanor, Clicheilyn Del Rosario and Jamie Nicanor.
The silver medalists were Edmon Velez, Eric Brando, Gervacio Sandoval III and Alvin Almonte (team saber) and Jamie Nicanor, Justine Gail Tinio, Wilhelmina Lozada and Mary Rose Alfonzo (women’s team foil) and Cristine Almas, Elaine Kea Gonzales, Jamie Nicanor and Justine Gail Tinio (team epee).
The men’s team epee bronze medalists were Lee Eigran Ergina, Nathaniel Perez, Francois Nowell Licono and Canlas Jr.
