Manila, Philippines - The first Dominador Pangilinan Youth Baseball Invitational gets going today with four teams gearing up for various international competitions vying for top honors at the San Lazaro Leisure and Business Park in Carmona, Cavite.
The 11-12 year-old Broncos, the Metro Schools League 2010 champions; the 11-12 year-old Philippine Habagat team, set to compete in the PONY Asia Championship in Seoul, Korea; the Under-12 Philippine Bagwis team, scheduled to vie in the South Asia Nankyu Championships in Singapore; and the 9-10 year-old Philippine Little Razcals, bound for the PONY World Series in Texas make up the roster in the event slated over the next two weekends.
The tournament is held in honor of Dominador Pangilinan, the benefactor of Philippine baseball for more than two decades and was responsible for promoting baseball as a national sport.
The opening ceremonies will start at 10 a.m. with Willie Revillame, chairman and president of WilProductions, to throw the ceremonial pitch.
The championship game will be held on June 26 starting at 10:30 a.m. with businessman/sportsman Manny V. Pangilinan invited as guest of honor.
San Lazaro Broadcasting Network (SLBN) will televise the games via Sky Cable channel 113, and Destiny Cable channel 84. The championship games on June 25-26 will be broadcast live at 10:30 a.m.
The tournament, held under the auspices of PONY Baseball Phils., is sponsored by WilProductions, Philracom, Manila Jockey Club, and Azzuro. Milo is the official drink of the tournament.
Rodolfo Tingzon Jr., president of PONY Baseball Phils, said he is looking forward to more regional tournaments nationwide to be organized by PONY Baseball Phils. as a way of promoting baseball and softball in the country.
