Mosley tapers off; Pacquiao revs up

- Abac Cordero -

Manila, Philippines - Shane Mosley is probably through the toughest part of training that on Tuesday he will open the doors to his training camp in snow-capped Big Bear in California.

Over in Hollywood, Manny Pacquiao continues to train behind closed doors, and select mediamen are only allowed in once the sessions are over.

Latest word that got out of the Pacquiao camp is that he nearly floored one of his sparring partners last Thursday, exactly a month before the May 7 fight in Las Vegas.

Mosley, according to Top Rank publicist Fred Sternburg, will hold a media day on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) along with his chief trainer, Naazim Richardson.

Pacquiao normally holds his media workout 10 days before a fight. For the Mosley media day, a couple of buses will take the media from Las Vegas and Los Angeles to Big Bear.

Mosley spoke to www.boxingscene.com <http://www.boxingscene.com/> recently and said he’d gone through Pacquiao’s most recent fights on tape.

The pride of Pomona is hoping to become the first boxer to beat Pacquiao in the last six years, only next to Erik Morales who outpointed the Pinoy icon in March of 2005.

Mosley said he knows how to do it, how to exploit Pacquiao’s flaws, if there’s any.

“We all have flaws. But are we able to capitalize on those flaws?” he told Robert Morales during an interview.

“With Pacquiao, he throws so many punches. He fights with so much fury. But I think I will be able to exploit them. I think it’s my speed, the power, even my size, will make it easy to get to those spots,” he said.

Still, Mosley is showing great respect for Pacquiao, whom he describes as a “phenomenal fighter.”

“This is a great challenge for me to prove I am one of the best out there,” Mosley said.

Pacquiao isn’t taking Mosley lightly as well, even if the 39-year-old boxer is coming off bouts that were far from impressive, including a draw against Sergio Mora late last year.

“I don’t think it’s because he’s older. I think he took Mora lightly because he’s not a popular fighter like Mayweather,” Pacquiao said in a chat with Brad Cooney.

“This time he is fighting me, and I know he will be doing his best to win the fight. I will be 100 percent ready for the fight.”
