CEU reigns in MNCAA caging

MANILA, Philippines - Axl Garcia took over for Centro Escolar University at crunchtime as the Scorpions completed a two-game sweep of the Philippine Women’s University with a 104-95 win in overtime in the finals of the seventh Men’s National College Athletic Association at the CEU gym in Mendiola recently.

Garcia, playing his final year in the team headed by CEU director and CafeFrance chairman Dr. Johnny Yap, tallied 22 points, four steals and three assists to help power the Scorpions to the victory in Game 2 of their best-of-three title series.

The Scorpions, who are currently seeing action in PBA’s D-League carrying the colors of CafeFrance, took Game 1, 72-61. They advanced to the finals by beating La Consolacion College.

With the win, the Scorpions, mentored by Mon Jose and backed by Advance Solution Inc., CafeFrance and HP, will represent NCR in the National MCAA slated next month in Bicol.

“The team is slowly improving and that’s because of the support of the school, especially Dr. Yap,” said team manager Bernard Yang.
