MANILA, Philippines – Drag racing gets into high gear as huge field is expected to turn up in the second leg of the 2011 National Drag Racing Championship Southern Series tomorrow at the Batangas Racing Circuit Drag Strip in Rosario, Batangas.
The title hunt remains wide open as none of the drivers, not even eight-time champ Jonathan Tiu, has dominated the event supported by Pagcor Sports, Yokohama Philippines, Chequered Flag, Racing Beat@Wave 89.1 FM, Aeromed, and sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philipines.
John Michael Dumaraos is eyeing a back-to-back win with high hopes of repeating his feat against top favorites in the Quick 8 division.
Dumaraos bagged his first career win with a stroke of luck up against strong contender Norman de la Peña of QSP and teammate Edwardo de la Peña in the Southern Series kickoff at the BRC drag strip last month.
His victory inspired less-favored but equally talented drivers to push a more aggressive campaign for the crown, especially the top bets from Team Rapide-Batangas, Montavita, Just Racing and Autokeep.
One of them is Alvin Gavino of H3 Motorsports who captured the Expert class crown after stopping John Michael Dumaraos from pulling a double triumph via a double breakout.
Favored in the other divisions are Akim Gabriel Cleofe of Lowtoys and Kenneth Carrido of Montavita.
Cleofe is seeking his second straight win in the Sportsman class against privateers Bong Montero and Aristeo Banaag.
Carrido, on the other hand, aims to rule the Hotstreet class anew over Julius Sambayan of RSL, Lou de Castro of Blade Speed and Ralf Jermaine de Guzman of Lowtoys.
