Brobio trains Montecillo Cup bets

-

MANILA, Philippines - Ramon Brobio, one of the country’s foremost junior golf heroes, has returned from a long stay in the US to help prepare the country’s bid for The Montecillo Cup Junior Golf Team Championship on March 6-11 at Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club in Lipa, Batangas.

Now a full-fledged professional, Brobio took over the coaching chores last month to ensure the competitiveness of the host team faced with the daunting task of beating the region’s best talents especially those from Thailand and Chinese-Taipei in the event honoring the late Amalia “Mommy” Montecillo, the woman behind the rise of the jungolf movement in Asia.

Gerry Handog, chair of the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines, believes that while the exploits of Brobio should be something for the Phl team members to draw inspiration from, it gets even better as they are now getting instructions from the player who was undoubtedly one of the best junior players of the world during his time.

“We hope that like Ramon, more alumni of Jungolf would help our cause and keep the momentum of our talent development,” said Handog, also citing Martin Lorenzo who is supporting the JGFP’s year-round activities.

Sponsoring the Montecillo Cup are the ICTSI, Chevrolet, Pancake House, Sizzlin Pepper, Teriyaki Boy, Philippine Airlines, Friends of Jungolf, Golf Depot, San Miguel Beer, Coca-Cola Bottlers, Duty Free, PacSports, MJ Carr Golf Management, Pisanti Golf, livescoreph.com, McDonald’s and Ishields. Inquirer Golf and A Round of Golf are media partners.

Aside from the Philippines, five other countries have confirmed participation in the event with Bangladesh and Chinese-Taipei as the latest to join the list. Thailand, Singapore and Guam have earlier sent their rosters.

Reigning national amateur champion Clyde Mondilla, fresh from helping Del Monte bag the top award in the PAL Interclub, is among the RP boys. The others are Miguel Tabuena, Jobim Carlos, Rupert Zaragosa, Gio Gandionco, Kenneth Kano JP De Claro and Jonar Austria. Andie Unson, Sarah Jane Ababa, Irina Gabasa, Princess Superal, Daniella Uy and Sheryl Villacencio make up the girls team.
