MANILA, Philippines - Host Misamis Oriental continued its dominating performance in the PLDT-Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) National Championships, sending seven fighters to the gold medal boutss at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol Garden in Cagayan de Oro City yesterday.
Freddie Basadre, a resident of Gingo-og City, posted a 10-4 decision over Remar Metuda in the junior bantamweight class in a duel of local bets while Reynold Lao (school boys 36kg), Markguil Salvaña (school boys 44kg), Samboy Lao (jr. boys 46kg), Reymark Casas (jr. boys flyweight), Rufino Sumaylo (youth boys 46kgs), Daryl Basadre (youth boys flyweight) and Janice Vallares (youth girls featherweight) all advanced to the finals.
Seven more MisOr bets will vie for final berths in the last batch of the semifinal round today.
Basadre blew an early 8-1 lead but survived two deductions and bucked a final round charge by Nico Magliquian of Kabaka-Manila in the youth boys flyweight.
The bout actually ended tied at 9 but Basadre had a better performance to beat Magliquian, 23-21, at the jury’s tally.
Vallares, cheered on by teammates and the crowd, fought back from a 2-3 deficit and pounced on Karina Jane Recaido’s one-point deduction to reach the finals.
Cebu City’s Jhack Tepora, on the other hand, went through via the final verdict over Jefry Bacocoy of Bago City.
The fight also ended at 9-all from the judges’ score pads and 20-all at the jury’s tally. The five judges finally broke the tie with 3-2 vote that gave the Cebuano fighter a shot at the gold medal in the jr. boys flyweight class.
Also advancing to the finals were Roi Jake Fragata (kids 26kgs) of Valencia City, Jiple Jay Cabrera of Davao del Norte and Renato Alias of Tayabas-Quezon both in the kids 30kgs division, Mario Martin of Bago City (kids minimumweight), Jose Ravelo Aballe of Davao del Norte (school boys 36kgs), Kenneth Paul Gentallan of Tayabas (school boys 44kgs), Reymart Flores of Bago City (jr boys 46kgs), Neil John Tabanao of Davao del Norte (jr. boys 54kgs), Joey Lanoy of General Santos City (youth boys 40kgs), Engelbert Moralde of Davao City (youth boys 52kgs), Sonny Katiandagho of Gen. Santos City (youth boys light weight), Josel Bacho of Mandaluyong (youth boys lightweight), Sherr Indoy of Asuncion (jr. girls 40kgs) and Aisah Alico of Iligan City (jr. girls 48kgs).
