SSC spikers enter final

- Joey Villar -

MANILA, Philippines –  Reigning titlist San Sebastian survived a tough second set challenge by Emilio Aguinaldo College before posting a 25-11, 25-23, 25-14 victory to advance to the finals in the women’s division of the 86th NCAA volleyball competition at the EAC gym yesterday.

Last year’s MVP Joy Benito and Elaine Cruz combined for 30 hits as they led the SSC squad’s net attack for another crack at the crown in the best-of-three finals against Letran starting Monday.

The Lady Knights eked out a tension-filled 25-23, 25-10, 23-25, 25-15 victory over the stubborn San Beda spikers in the other semifinal match.

Power-hitter Mharu Burce unleashed 19 hits while the crisp-hitting Manel Carolino unloaded 16 to send the Muralla-based school to its first championship appearance in five years.

San Sebastian and Letran thus both notched their second straight win and will collide today at the same venue in the final day of the semis in a preview of their up-and-coming title showdown.

The Lady Knights delivered 16 aces, including a season-high eight from Gena Andaya and four from Sara Espelita.

Lalaine Villarin scattered 12 hits, Espelita and Andaya wound up with 10 and nine hits, respectively, while Melissa Cua chipped 11 points.

Janine Marciano fired 22 hits while Colne Malana added 11 for San Beda, which will dispute third place honors with EAC today.
