PCCL toasts champions, backers

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) and ABS-CBN today will co-host “A Toast,” a recognition and thanksgiving event for the winners and those contributed to the success of the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Championship.

The affair will be held at 9501 Restaurant, 14th floor, ELJ Bldg. in Quezon City.

The top four teams that will receive prizes (athletic equipment/items) are: champion Ateneo Blue Eagles P500,000 for the school and P400,000 for team members; runners-up Adamson U Soaring Falcons, P200,000; third placers De La Salle Green Archers (third place), P100,000; and fourth placers University of Cebu Webmasters, P50,000.

PCCL chairman Rey Gamboa will also announce the recipient of the “National Collegiate Player of the Year” award, the highest honor that PCCL confers.

This is given to the collegiate player who during his collegiate playing years demonstrated exemplary conduct on and off the court and attained college education while playing competitively at high standards of performance and sportsmanship.

“This awardee is worthy for emulation as a role model of an accomplished collegiate athlete dedicated to his game and in acquiring education,” said Gamboa.

Last year, the award was given to Nonoy Baclao of Ateneo who eventually became the No. 1 pick in the PBA.

The annual PCCL Roll of Honors will also include the Fortitude Award, Comeback Award, Grinder Award, Breakthrough Performance Award and the Motivator of the Year Award.

The “M. V. Pangilinan Special Awards” were handed out right after the championship series to the following: Nico Salva (ADMU) as Most Valuable Player in the Finals and Mythical Team member; and Kirk Long (ADMU), Lester Alvarez (ADU), Alex Nuyles (ADU) and Junmar Fajardo (UC) as the other members of the Mythical Team; Norman Black (ADMU) as Best Coach; and Meynard Bellecer as Best Referee.
