MANILA, Philippines – Jobim Carlos and Clare Amelia Legaspi built sizeable leads in their respective divisions as the locals fended off the foreign challenge in the PCSO 11th Philippine International Junior Golf Championships at the Ayala Greenfield Golf and Leisure Club in Calamba, Laguna last Wednesday.
Carlos carded a 73 to post a nine-stroke lead over Chien Chaing Wang of Taiwan in the boys’ special division (18-21 years old) while Legaspi submitted the day’s best score of 70 to move 12 shots up in the 12-and-under girls’ category of this event sponsored by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and Maynilad as the official drinking water.
In the boys’ Class A (15-17), Angelo Jose Gandionco shot 72 to share the lead with Michael Hsiao of Taiwan with Nicklaus Chiam of Singapore two shots adrift at 74.
Meanwhile, the foreign players invited by the Philippine Junior Golf Federation headed by Edgardo “Tito Boy” Cantada showed the way in other divisions with Jun Ho Won of Korea turning in an 86 for a one-shot lead over Harrison Yuof of China in the boys’ Class C (11-12). Tae Woo Kim of Korea made an 89 while Filipino Jaime Agustin Oposa stood at fourth with a 91.
In the boys’ Class D (10-and-under), Xuan Hao Tan of Singapore fired a 77 for a five-stroke lead over Christopher Popp (82) and Shailesh Vasandani (82) of the Philippines.
In the girls’ special division (18-21), Hsien Huang of Taiwan shot a 71, four shots ahead of Andrea Unson and Princess Superal, who both scored 75s. Daniella Uy and Juily Vasandani shot 77 and 78, respectively.
Ziyu Ge of China made an 82 in the girls’ 13-17 bracket while in the boys’ Class B (13-14), Ruperto Zaragoza III fired a 74 to post a three-shot lead over Sebastian Lorenzo (77) and four over Gabriel Manotoc (78).
