Tams shear Eagles, share volley lead

MANILA, Philippines –  Far Eastern University grabbed a share of the lead in the UAAP Season 73 men’s volleyball tournament after dismantling Ateneo, 25-16, 25-21, 27-25, yesterday at the Arena.

Nestor Molate punched in 15 points, five coming off blocks, while Karl Ian dela Calzada added 14, making 10 of them on attacks, as the Tams went 4-0 in a tie with idle defending champion University of Sto. Tomas.

Duane Craig Teves and Ricci Gonzales had nine points each for Ateneo, which dropped to 1-3.

University of the East edged National U, 27-25, 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9, for its first win in four games, tying the Bulldogs,University of the Philippines, Adamson and Ateneo in a five-way logjam at fourth spot.

In the women’s division, NU escaped past UP, 25-20, 19-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13, to improve to 2-2 and a get a share of third with Adamson and UE.

Maricar Nepomuceno (21), Carmina Aganon (20) and Rialen Sante (19) took scoring cudgels in the absence of NU leader Mervic Mangui, who’s attending to her father’s death.

Carmela Lopez and Angeli Araneta had 24 and 23 points, respectively, for UP (1-3).
