UE 4-peat champ in women's fencing
MANILA, Philippines – University of the East (UE) swept the six gold medals at stake to achieve a four-peat in the women’s division of the UAAP Season 73 fencing competitions that ended Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
MVP Jamie Nicanor (foil), Christine Almas (epee) and Nicanor’s younger sister Jylyn (sabre) spiked the Lady Warriors’ charge in the individual events then spearheaded them to a sweep of the three team mints to romp off with crown No. 4.
UE’s other medal in the three-day competition – a silver – came from sabre bet Mary Rose Alfonso, who finished second to Jylyn Nicanor.
Emerging a far second was La Salle with two silvers, courtesy of Anna Gabriella Estimada’s silver in individual foil and their team sabre entries, along with three bronzes.
Ateneo came in third with a two-silver, one-bronze output, followed by Far Eastern U (0-1-3), University of the Philippines (four bronze) and University of Santo Tomas (one bronze).
The Fighting Maroons, however, foiled a double celebration for UE as they dethroned the Warriors in the men’s division.
Joshua Paunil grabbed the individual epee gold and the Maroons bagged the team sabre title while Rafael Ramos netted the individual sabre silver as UP captured its first men’s fencing diadem since 1996.
Ateneo took runner-up honors with a close 2-0-1 medal harvest followed by UST (1-2-1), FEU (1-1-3), UE (0-2-4) and DLSU (one bronze).
