MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine STAR defended its crown in the fourth annual staging of the Media Sports Club Bowling Tournament which drew to a close yesterday at the Paeng’s Midtown Bowling Center in Robinsons Place Manila.
Seeded second only to TV giant GMA going into the final day of competition, The STAR waited for the winner of the battle between Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) and Accenture, seeded third and fourth, respectively. Accenture prevailed over MBC, then went on to face the STAR team for a one-game knockout.
With the lineup of team captain Lito Angelo of production, Delia Nuñez of maintenance, chief accountant Perla de Lara, the electrical department’s Tony Galuza, and contributing writer Kap Maceda Aguila, STAR subdued Accenture, 555-515, to arrange a sudden-death showdown with GMA.
The tournament format counted only the top three scores per game.
In the final match, the fancied big guns of GMA failed to deliver, even as STAR’s quintet struck big with Aguila scoring 225, Angelo adding 192, and Nuñez backing them up with a 175 to tally 592, beating GMA (568) by 24 pins.
Aguila also captured the high single (266) and series (699) honors, and placed fourth overall in total pinfalls (1,983). Galuza was in ninth overall (1,390).
Nuñez finished second with 1,484 pinfalls in the ladies division.
The other members of The STAR team were Rose Monsura, Ding Andrade, Noel Bartolome, Edgar Reyes and Ed de Lara, Roman Floresca, and Marichu Villanueva.
Coca-Cola Export Corp., Colgate Palmolive Phils. and Superferry co-sponsored the tournament that was also participated in by Manila Standard Today, Abante, Vintage, and Superferry.
