Phl bowlers take crack at Masters gold

GUANGZHOU – Singles gold medalist Biboy Rivera and women bowlers Liza del Rosario and Marianne Posadas advanced to the Masters event, hoping to gain two more gold medals at the close of bowling competitions tomorrow at the Tianhe Sports Center.

Rivera had a concluding score of 5231 pinfalls from the 24-game series counting the completed singles, doubles, trios and team of five and finished eighth overall to advance to the men’s Masters starting today.

Frederick Ong ranked 41st, Chester King 47th, Raoul Miranda 53rd, Benshir Layoso 72nd, Collins Jose 87th in the final tally are already out of the competitions.

In women’s play, the team completed the series without a medal but two bets – Del Rosario and Posadas – advanced to the Masters.

Del Rosario goes to the Masters as a 12th seed with a concluding score of 4972 while Posadas is 16th and last with a score of 4949.

Kien Liang Liew of Malaysia won the gold medal in the men’s All-Events with a 24-game series of 5448, while two Koreans – Yong Kyu Choi (5441) and Bok Eum Choi (5431) – took the silver and bronze.

The three move to the Masters as the top three seeds.

Seeded at the top in the women’s masters are Korean gold and silver medalists Sun Ok Hwang (5508) and Jin A Choi (5276) and bronze medalist Yuhong Zhang of China (5131).

In yesterday’s completed team-of-five, Korea won the gold, Indonesia the silver and Malaysia the bronze.

In Asian Games competition, every bowler plays six games in singles, doubles, trios and team event. The top three in these categories win the medals.

After 24 games, the All-Events medals are awarded to the top three bowlers.

The top 16 bowlers from the all-events play in the Masters category which is a best-of-five format in a knockout schedule. The players are seeded according to their rank in the all-events.
