MANILA, Philippines - University of Cebu and University of San Carlos downed their respective rivals to clinch the first two berths in the Elite Eight of the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Sweet 16 at the Cebu Coliseum last Thursday.
The Webmasters, the CESAFI champions, cruised past University of Iloilo, 96-66, as five players scored in double figures, led by Gerald Ampoon and Val Cueva with 15 points apiece.
The Warriors, on the other hand, clawed back from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit as they upset the CESAFI second placers Green Lancers, 71-64, in the other game.
Trailing, 45-56, the Warriors scored 14 unanswered points, capped by two consecutive jumpers from Sam Hermosa as they grabbed the lead en route to the victory.
Hermosa, a CESAFI mythical team member, fired a game-high 25 points and finished with four rebounds, two assists and one steal for San Carlos.
Ralf Olivares scored 17 points for the Green Lancers, who were booted out of the knockout phase for the second straight year after losing to Mapua Institute of Technology in 2009.
Meanwhile, PCCL Sweet 16 action resumes Monday in Manila with the Cardinals taking on National University and La Salle clashing with Letran at The Arena in San Juan.
