Donaire couldn't land big fights
DALLAS – Nonito Donaire, the other boxing star from the Philippines, is still looking for the fight that he really wants.
Now he’s hoping that his Feb. 19 date with Fernando Montiel won’t slip away.
Otherwise, he’d be forced to move up in weight and take on Wilfredo Vasquez instead.
“They’re bigger than me so they should be more confident to face me. I really want Montiel but if it doesn’t push through maybe it will be easier to convince Vasquez,” said Donaire Saturday.
Is there any Plan C?
“I don’t know. It could be Plan A, B, C or D. But mainly, I want to fight Montiel,” said Donaire, referring to the same boxer who had eluded him in the past.
Donaire is such a skilled fighter, flashy and cocky if needed, and armed with a killer punch. But he seemed to have difficulty landing the big fights, the fights he really wants.
“I have no idea why. I’ve been calling out everybody. I’ve been wanting to fight everyone. I already have a contract with Montiel for Feb. 19. If it slips away, I guess that’s not my fault anymore,” he added.
He was already scheduled to face Montiel in a flyweight contest April last year but ended up fighting Raul Martinez after the former backed out a month before the bout, saying he couldn’t make the weight.
This time they’re both fighting in the bantamweight division.
“There should be no more excuses,” said the Filipino star.
