AIFC sweeps Minda qualifier

MANILA, Philippines - Agro-Industrial Foundation College (AIFC) of Davao City trounced Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College (RMMC) of General Santos City, 82-65, Saturday to complete a sweep of the Mindanao leg of the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Championship League at the Xavier University gym in Cagayan de Oro City.

The AIFC Sailors, coached by Mat Cubero, leaned on Clemente Ruiz, Andres Milenegg and Miko Estrellante to win their first regional championship.

The Sailors now proceed to Cebu City for the VisMin qualifying games for a spot in the Sweet 16 Finals.

On the way to the championships, the Sailors edged Southern City College of Zamboanga, 88-87, and outlasted Liceo de Cagayan University of Cagayan de Oro, 81-78, in overtime.

The regional event, sponsored by PLDT, Smart, Molten Balls and ABS-CBN, was hosted by the Cagayan de Oro Basketball Federation Inc. headed by Edgardo Dacoco.

In the zonal competition, the Sailors will compete against Visayas champion University Iloilo, CESAFI’s Southwestern University and University of San Carlos on Nov. 14-17 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Two Sweet 16 seats will be disputed.

Teams that have secured slots in the Sweet 16 are CESAFI champion, University of Cebu and runner-up University of Visayas.

Joining them are the top four teams in the UAAP – Ateneo, Far Eastern University, Adamson and La Salle – and in the NCAA – San Beda College, San Sebastian, Jose Rizal University and Mapua.
