Two events usher in UAAP late season tiff

- Olmin Leyba -

MANILA, Philippines - The UAAP Season 73 will kick off its second semester hostilities with two ballgames – volleyball and baseball – in the last weekend of November.

Volleyball, the most keenly-awaited sport after basketball in the first semester, will blast off on Nov. 27 at the Arena with a heavy four-game bill featuring defending men’s and women’s champion University of Santo Tomas.

The Tigers will commence their quest for a four-peat against Ateneo de Manila U at 11 a.m. while the back-to-back-seeking Tigresses debut against the Lady Eagles in Day 1’s last game at 4 p.m.

Also plunging into the competition are De La Salle U Green Archers and National U Bulldogs at 9 a.m. and Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws and NU Lady Bulldogs at 2 p.m.

Baseball will open action on Nov. 28 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium with three games topbilled by three-time defending champion Adamson’s match-up with Ateneo.

Last year’s losing finalist NU will also take the diamond versus UST while Season 72 semifinalists La Salle and University of the Philippines will tangle in the final game of the opener.

A total of seven sports will be played in the collegiate league’s second half. Aside from volleyball and baseball, the eight universities will also battle it out in chess, tennis, track and field, fencing, and football as they gun for the Season 73’s general championship.

UST occupies the top spot in the overall standings halfway through the season with 154 points built around Top 3 finishes in 10 out of the 14 events played in the first semester.

Host La Salle (141) stands at second followed by Far Eastern U and University of the Philippines (111 each).
