Cordero shines in age group swim

-

MANILA, Philippines - University Athletic Association of the Philippines most outstanding swimmer Denjylie Cordero imposed her dominance in all five gold medal events as she ruled the 15-17 age group in the sixth leg of the Philippine Swimming League age group competitions yesterday at the Amoranto swimming pool in Quezon City.

Cordero, an Ateneo sophomore, swept the 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and backstroke and 100m backstroke to bag the best swimmer award in her category in the event supported by the Amoranto Sports Complex under administrator Andy Apostol.

Delia Angela also duplicated her elder sister’s feat in the same events to emerge best swimmer in the 13-14 age group.

St. Jude Catholic School, known for its high academic standards and excellent sports program, became the most outstanding swimming club among 25 teams.

The school, headed by Mario Lao and coach Ernest Ungoco, had 642 points through the efforts of most outstanding swimmers Janiko Limfilipino (9-10 boys) and Joshua Ching (13-14 boys).

Six-year-old Australian Bhay Newberry made eyes turn with her golden performance in the 6-under girls, sharing honors with Charles Ticbaen in the same category.

Other outstanding winners were Ice Tan and Kyle Libat (7-8), Paula Cayanan (9-10), B-Ann Rojo and Hans Ramos (11-12), and Jeje Tolentino (15-17).

Second best club was the Susan Papa Swimming Academy under coaches Dennis Cordero and Susan Benasa. Third place went to Bosay Aquatics Club headed by Emer Matienzo.

The meet was held at the last minute at the Amoranto Swimming Complex after the PSL was informed only Thursday that it could not use the Rizal Memorial swimming pool which it reserved three weeks back.

“We thank Mr. Andy Apostol for accommodating us at the last minute. The Amoranto Swimming Pool came to our rescue through the efforts of PSL technical director Edgar Galeno,” said PSL president Susan Papa.

The last leg of the PSL age group series will be held Nov. 27. Information: Emer Matienzo 09174548038 or Ed Galeno 09265893600
