Eagles, Lady Falcons rip Unigames foes
MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo and Adamson scored a pair of contrasting victories as they kicked off their respective campaigns in basketball in the Philippine Sports Commission-University Games (PSC-Unigames) at the Cimafranca Field in Silliman University last Sunday.
The Blue Eagles, fresh from their three-peat UAAP championship, trailed 10-12 in the early going but picked up their game to overwhelm the Mindanao State University-Marawi cagers, 92-42, in men’s caging.
The Lady Falcons, on the other hand, battled back from 40-43 count in the fourth quarter to turn back the gritty Lyceum Lady Pirates, 68-54, in women’s basketball.
“We’re not in great shape yet so I guess we did pretty well with this win,” said Ateneo coach Norman Black. “I would expect that this may be a repeat of the UAAP as our top opponents should be FEU, NU and Adamson.”
In other results, host Silliman U absorbed twin setbacks with the Stallions losing to the St. Benilde Blazers, 57-75, and the Silliman Mares bowing to the UP-Diliman side, 31-74.
Rizal Technological University defeated local team Asian College of Science and Technologies (ACSAT), 95-84, and Lyceum trounced Negros Oriental State University (NORSU), 103-74, both in men’s division.
Foundation University eked out an 81-80 victory over Holy Angel University and John B Lacson Foundation hacked out a 67-63 win over Xavier University.
In football, Univ. of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and La Salle fought to a 1-1 game, the same score turned in by Ateneo and UP-Diliman.
La Salle swept Foundation U, 3-0, in women’s volleyball, Dipolog Medical Center College Founation beat Silliman, 3-1.
UST opened defense of its men’s volleyball crown as it swept John B Lacson Foundation Maritime University, 25-11, 25-18, 25-7; UP-Diliman bested St. Louis University, FEU gave up a set in defeating UNO-R, DLSU blanked Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod and JB Lacson Foundation, St Benilde edged Ateneo de Manila.
DLSU beat St. Louis University, FEU downed Marawi State U, Lyceum defeated South Western U, Adamson disposed of Foundation University, University of St. La Salle won over Silliman, South Western edged St. Louis U in three sets, and MSU-Marawi toppled Foundation University in women’s volley.
