Guam booters blank RP side in AFC Under 16
MANILA, Philippines - Guam posted its second win by beating the Philippine side, 2-0, in the AFC Under-16 Women’s Championship 2011 Qualifying Round 1 (Group A) at the University of Makati football field last Sunday.
After yielding two goals in the first half, the Filipinos went for broke in the final half to no avail as Guam’s goalkeeper came through with saves to frustrate the hosts.
The win came after Guam opened its campaign with a 4-0 rout of Timor Leste last Friday, watched by hundreds of expats.
Vietnam, meanwhile, kicked off its bid with a 9-0 demolition of Singapore in the tournament organized by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission.
Fast emerging as the regional power in the sport, the Vietnamese rattled the Singaporeans with their crisp and accurate passing that dry up a number of easy goals to the delight of their supporters.
The Filipinos, meanwhile, hope to bounce back as they play Timor Leste at 9 a.m. today, also at the Makati football field.
The hosts face Vietnam on Friday and Singapore on Sunday.
The event is a follow-up to its successful staging of the AFC Under-19 Women’s Championship Group A Qualifiers last month.
